This is the "unofficial" HRC PGM-FI mod for the RC45 US-spec. Claimed
horsepower at the crank goes up from 101hp to 120hp. What I did was, instead of
soldering the wires together, I created a "mini wire coupler" so it is easy to
go back to the original connections. Here are the steps.
- Purchase the following items from Radio Shack:
1 pack of wire snap-on insulated connectors:
Catalog #: 64-3086
You will also need a pair of wire strippers and wire crimpers.
- Remove the seat (two bolts under the rear corners of the seat), remove the
rear cowl (three bolts on each side and the tail lights from the cowl), and
disconnect the negative battery terminal lead from the battery. The PGM-FI
unit is the large silver box with two wire connectors going into it, a black
one and a white one:
- Remove the black electrical tape around the wire bundles:
- Identify the Orange/Blue (Orange is the dominate color), Pink/White (Pink
is the dominate color), and the Black/White (Black is the dominate color)
wires as shown in the picture. Cut each of the three wires about four inches
from the connector they go into (either the black or the white one):
- Strip about 3/8" of insulation from the ends of all of the cut wires.
On the three wires coming from the connectors, install male wire connectors. On
the three wires coming from the wire harness, install female wire connectors:
- Make a wire coupler with three females and one male connector and three strips
of 18-22 gauge wire, each about 2" long. The male connector should have all
three wires going into it and the other end of the wires should be female
connectors.
- You should now have all the connectors crimped on the wires and the wire
coupler:
- Now connect the male connector on the wire coupler to the female connector on the
Black/White wire coming out of the wire harness.
Connect the other three female connectors to the three male connectors coming
out of the two connectors (Orange/Blue, Pink/White, and Black/White).
- Wrap up the exposed wiring harness wires with electrical tape.
When/if you want to resort back to the stock connectors, just simply unplug the wire
coupler you made and connect the two Orange/Blue wires together, connect the two
Pink/White wires together, and connect the two Black/White wires together.
